Betrayal – Danielle Hardgrave

Darcy finds the handsome Gabriel washed up on the beach near her house. He’s injured and naked, but that doesn’t stop him making a few demands; no hospitals, keep him safe, and tell no one. Darcy just knows he was involved with the crash that happened out at sea that night, but is he a victim or a villain?

Some of you may remember that I reviewed Danielle Hardgrave’s To Trust a Wolf a little while back, and I find myself feeling a lot of the same things about Betrayal, the first book in the Sea Assassins Trilogy.  It’s such a quick read that it feels more like a taster story, showcasing what the series has to offer rather than an opener, and I still find the almost unquestioning acceptance of the existence of shifters a bit odd. I need more of a reaction. 

But the series has potential!

The shifter/sea assassins premise is really interesting, and nothing like anything I’ve read before. There’s a lot to play with, and I’d love to see Hardgrave utilise that, taking her stories a lot further.

So again I’d like to see more development in the next instalment.

Kyle De Luca – The Saga Of Cyrillus Severus: Volume 1

This is a quick and short novella from Kyle De Luca designed to introduce us to his character Cyrillus Severus.

Now with most books we review I try to go in blind so that I’m not judging from the start, and that’s what I did with this little short. When I started The Saga, I wrongly assumed that it was going to be an Epic tale set in ancient times because of the name of the main character and the writing style, so imagine my confusion when he hops on bus or sends an email. For me this wasn’t a huge issue, it just left me a little confused and a little disappointed because the start was set up so brilliantly that I was expecting a huge adventure.

In terms of writing style there’s no doubt that De Luca is talented, and he draws you in easily. However, in regards to the storyline there just wasn’t enough for me.  For example, there is an incident in which Cyrillus must leave his location because of an old lady. Now while the author hints at why, because she disliked him and was spreading rumours – there wasn’t enough detail for me. What rumours? Why did she dislike him to begin with? What did people in the town think about it? Did they give him dirty looks in the street or cuss him out?  The whole incident started and was resolved in a few lines which just wasn’t enough for me to get into or really enjoy.

I’m interested to see where the story goes, but without the added detail or even some more dialogue I’m not sure it could hold my attention for very long.  This gets three stars because I enjoyed the start, and De Luca’s writing but I can’t give it anymore because I didn’t really enjoy the story line itself because it felt a little flat and lacking detail.

The Devotion of Suspect X- Keigo Higashino

The Devotion of Suspect X is sheer brilliancy, and I can’t really say much else other than you have to read this in order to understand why it is so brilliant. The way the book is set up is just so incredible it will drive crazy but I promise in the end it is so worth it. And what’s so fantastically annoying is the answer is so blatantly obvious! Yet Higashino still manages to keepyou in suspense throughout the entire novel. I mean even once he’s revealed the truth, I was still second guessing myself flicking back a few pages, all the while thinking that this can’t be it surely.  Just brilliant, and yes I’ve said that a lot, but it really is!

Higashino is a master of mystery.

A Beautiful Funeral – Jamie McGuire

So I read this a while back but never actually got round to writing the review, naughty me! You’ve all probably read this by now, given the hype, but I thought I’d still throw my fifty pence worth in.

You should all know by now that I’m a massive Jamie McGuire fan, and that the Maddox brothers are the one. If you don’t, then where have you been?! I think I mention them in  all of my posts. Ok, slight exaggeration but its pretty damn close. Anywho, this book was definitely on my highly anticipated list, and while overall I did think it was a good end to the series, it was not without its faults. Now I can’t say too much without giving away the #whoisit for those of you who have yet to read it, but I was more than a little disappointed by McGuire’s treatment of a certain character. I just felt like in the end, they were just used as a dramatic plot device and completely overlooked.  For those of you who have read it, did you feel the same? Because I honestly feel like you’ll know who I’m talking about without my saying the name. It was that much of a big deal.

Other than that, it was great to get a glimpse into the characters lives post happily ever after and the story was pretty exciting, if a tad over the top. But let’s get real, that’s exactly what I came for so it didn’t really let me down. My love for McGuire and the Maddox brothers still burns as brightly.
