Unsaid Things – Jerica MacMillan

Abby is excited to spend Christmas with Lance’s family in Texas and has no idea that he is planning to propose to her on Christmas morning. However, their plans get interrupted when Abby’s brother suddenly reappears and she has to go home. Just when Lance thinks he has broken down all of Abby’s walls, she pushes him away. Will proposing reassure her or will it just make everything a whole lot worse?

Unsaid Things continues the story of the first couple in the Players of Marycliff University series, Lance and Abby. For me, this was pretty awesome because we’ve only gotten glimpses of them since Summer Fling. But what I really liked about Jerica’s decision to return to their story is it offers more a realistic view of love. Let’s face it, life goes on after the happily ever after. There are struggles and loving someone doesn’t often make things easy, but that’s what makes it worth it in the end!

The story itself had a nice pace and the characters were well developed. I particularly liked that Abby still maintained a certain level of independence while learning to be more trusting and open. You know I love a strong female lead!

So it’s an easy 4 stars from me! Go check it out.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review.

Priest by Sierra Simone

Tyler is a priest, who went into the profession after the abuse of his sister by their local priest. He hopes to bring the community back into the church and support people the way his local church never did. He’s doing a great job, running bible groups, pancake mornings and other community events – that is until Poppy Danforth walks into his confessional booth.

The sex scenes are very steamy, taboo and raunchy. They are over exaggerated and Poppy is a hugely oversexed character, but I guess that’s what the author was going for. The chemistry between them was good but they have some serious communication and trust issues. Tyer is addicted to Poppy and I liked how Simone explored that, making him more reckless and manic as the book went on.

I enjoyed this book but there were a few things that didn’t work for me but that’s just based upon my personal tastes. Tyler was overly possessive and he was too much like Sterling for my taste. He also could’ve used a little more humility for a priest – he mentions several times the women he’s been with and how before he was a priest he got sex easily. I didn’t like the storyline with his sister, she was abused by a priest and that informs his choice to become a priest – fine. But then he becomes a priest who defiles the church by using sacred oil to have anal sex while calling the woman a slut? It was bordering too much on the line of abuse and having been aligned with the sister it just didn’t sit right.

If you like the taboo, aren’t easily offended and you’re after a quick, steamy read then I’d recommend this book.

Dani’s Return Excerpt

It took two people to bring out their order. Ace’s stomach growled as the smell reached his nostrils. He could practically feel his wolf lick his chops as he looked down at his two triple cheeseburgers, extra-large loaded fries, and an order of wings.

The bell rung over the door to the diner, but Ace and Brett were too busy digging into their food to notice the newcomer that had entered the establishment. All conversation about going after his mate stalled. He was in food heaven as he dug into his loaded fries.

A light scent of lavender and vanilla floated around Ace, gaining his wolf’s attention. He sniffed the air. Ace would know the scent from anywhere. It had been twelve years since he had last smelled it. He inhaled deeper, taking the scent in.

It can’t be!

He put his burger down and wiped his hands on his napkin before letting his eyes wander around the diner in search of the newcomer. Humans and shifters both filled the diner, but there was one particular figure at the take-out counter that caught his attention.

She was here.

His heart felt as if it wanted to jump out of his chest as his eyes took in the flawless caramel complexion of the sexiest woman he had ever laid eyes on. It had been twelve long years since he had last seen her, but he would know her from anywhere.

He finished scraping the windows with a smile on his face, and when he got in he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her across the bench seat and into his kiss. It was a strange juxtaposition of hot and cold—his skin chilled from being outside, his mouth hot against hers, his fingers freezing as they teased under her sweater inside her unbuttoned coat, heat pooling between her thighs.

She broke away gasping. “Let’s go home.”

Lance smiled, a devilish glint in his eye, like he knew exactly why she wanted to go home. He probably did. They knew each other so well, even though they’d only met six months ago. No one knew her better than him, not even Megan.

Instead of scooting back to her side of the bench seat, she fished the lap belt for the middle out of the crack where it met the back, wanting to stay close to Lance. He glanced down at her before putting the car in reverse and maneuvering them out of the parking lot. “I love you.”

She lay her head on his shoulder, enjoying the feel of his muscles working as he turned the steering wheel hand over hand. “I love you, too.”

They didn’t speak on the twenty minute drive home. Abby wanted to ask about his family’s reactions to her leaving yesterday and now him leaving today, but fear of what they might’ve said kept her silent. She didn’t want any negativity to ruin their reunion, even if they hadn’t been apart long. It felt like it had been ages since they’d been together. So talk of families, both families, could wait until they were home and fully reunited.

She could tell Lance had the same idea when he parked his suitcase just inside their door, dropping his backpack next to it, and immediately went to her, his hands going to her hips, his mouth melding with hers. She hadn’t even gotten her coat off yet, and his hands slid inside it, moving over her back, down to her ass and up her back again, this time under her sweater, his hands still chilly against her bare skin.

Her hands made a similar path over him, first up his chest, then down, pulling his sweatshirt up at his sides until her hands encountered bare skin. He broke away first, pushing back from her, his eyes glinting. “Bedroom. Naked. Now.”

Step-Brother Dearest by Penelope Ward

This was a quick and steamy read, exploring the taboo relationship of step-brother and sister.

Greta’s safe, happy home life is thrown into disarray when her step-father’s son, Elec comes to stay. He’s mean, moody and hates his father – something he takes out on Greta. But he’s also brooding, tattooed, hot and has a lip piercing. No matter how much she wants to stay away, Greta finds herself trying to be his friend. Things between them heat up until Elec has to leave abruptly, but a death brings them back together later.

I loved the chemistry between Greta and Elec, it was so hot! The battle of wills thing they had going on, and the denial of any sexual attraction just added to the heat. Greta was a little weak for me, she was easily upset and to be honest I just wanted a little more from her. Elec was every inch the dark, brooding book boyfriend and he saved the dynamic for me.

Parts of this book were repetitive because Greta reads something Elec wrote about their relationship which is almost the same as what we’ve already read in the beginning. So it just felt a bit re-hashed and rushed. I will admit that I didn’t see the plot twists coming, so as always that earns brownie points from me.

Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things by Martina McAtee

I don’t know where to start with this book, there was so much going on in a fantastic way. The storyline was a bit of a slow starter but once it got fired up I couldn’t put it down, I bought the second book as soon as I’d finished the first and imagine how gutted I was to find out that book three isn’t out yet. It was fast paced, easy to read  and stole a piece of my heart. I FLOVE Ember and Mace. And don’t even get me started on Rhys and Kai.The sexual chemistry is sizzling up in that little supernatural town.

Seventeen year old Ember is a little socially awkward, with an alcoholic father and no mother she tends to prefer the company of the dead. She spends her time wandering around the cemetery or working part time in the morgue. After her father dies her life is thrown into a tailspin as everything she thought she knew about herself turns out to be a lie.

After an odd encounter with a gorgeous boy at her father’s funeral, two people who claim to be family sent to ‘rescue her’ and a strange sensation taking over her body Ember learns that she was born into a powerful family. A magical family. Not knowing who to trust Ember must learn to navigate her new life, her adoptive family and gain control over her powers – which seem to be growing at an alarming rate.

McAtee has so many supernatural creatures crammed into her books, witches, banshees, werewolves, reapers etc. that it really is supernatural heaven. This combined with the YA aspects, made a hugely delicious read that proved impossible to put down. She gives the tropes and storylines such depth, they are interwoven in a complex web that could potentially be all tangled and messy but McAtee handles it with precision and I wanted to know more about everyone and everything.

Lincoln Hospital: Volume 1 by Cassia Brightmore

Dr. Cian O’Reilly doesn’t just save lives at Lincoln Hospital, on the 23rd of each month he also dispenses his own brand of bloody justice. As the top surgeon in a busy hospital Cian has the means to hide his dark side, and a trusted team who aid him in ridding the city of scum. Cian is blunt, rude and exercises complete control over everything in his life. But when a young, innocent faced intern Athena Payne joins the hospital his carefully constructed life is thrown into turmoil.

The chemistry Cian and Athena have is palpable, creating a scorching read and so many intense encounters between the two of them that I wanted more of it. I loved the dark, bloody elements – it made the book feel gritty and raw. I also loved Cian as a character, he was brooding and broken inside. His backstory was heartbreaking and convincing.

What I struggled with was Athena’s transformation from goody two shoes, her aspirations, dreams and goals as an intern didn’t match up with the ending of the book. I think for that to be more convincing I needed more angst, pain or trauma from her. Maybe more of an insight into her mind as it goes to those dark places. As a result I thought that after all the suspense and the intense build up that the ending was a little rushed.
