Opaque Mirrors by Courtney Lane

Opaque Mirrors is dark, twisted and strangely sexy. I’d never heard of snuff/torture porn before so it was educational for me. A new experience. It’s not for me but Lane pulls you into this wicked world where sex and violence clash together.

It isn’t always an easy read, some parts made me wince and others made me grin but Lane toes the line between like an expert. The writing in compelling and evocative, dealing with themes of torture, violence, murder and pornography. But if you’re looking for an original read don’t let this put you off – I highly recommend it, I couldn’t put it down.

Whitney has become disillusioned with sex. Moonlighting in her mothers escort business has desensitised her to the point where only the extreme can bring her pleasure. This is how she comes to enjoy snuff porn and discovers Nick, an adult film star. When he asks her to help him achieve the ultimate orgasm a chain of events are set in motion. You don’t know what to believe or who to trust. Nothing in their small town is what it seems. I don’t want to say much more because it really is something you need to read for yourself but it is definitely not for the faint hearted or those of a squeamish disposition.

It was fast paced, full of action, had several twists and turns, sex and gore. I’m giving it 4 * simply because the violence/snuff is not my thing. It was a really good read but like I said, it made me wince in parts but that’s according to my personal tastes.

What are your shelves like?

All over Instagram and Facebook I’ve been seeing these beautiful shelves, with Pop figures and framed pictures, all enatly colour co-ordinated. Now Ash’s shelves are like this, but mine? Well mine are a mess of well loved books. I don’t seem to be able to do neat. I saw this picture on Tumbler and it reminded me of my shelves. Are you as messy as me?

Get Lucky by Lila Monroe

This is a sexy, slick ‘Hangover’ type book. When Nate and Julia wake up drunk after a night in Vegas, they try to piece together their evening. It was laugh out loud funny! This steamy little romance appealed to the nerdy side of me as well as the hopeless romantic. There are some geeky little references right from the start so Lila Monroe had me hooked from the get go.

Nate Wexler is a Darcy figure. He’s a divorce lawyer who doesn’t believe in romance. He’s in Vegas for his best friend’s wedding and can’t keep his pessimistic opinions to himself, especially when he bumps into romance writer Julia. You see where this is going right?
It was funny, sweet and very Whovian. I love that the two Doctors that Julia imagines giving her advice are my favourites. I laughed at the cheese of her fiction and how she embraced it fully, challenging Nate and his stuffy preconceptions.

It was steamy, well written and stole a piece of my heart. It was funny and sexy – not an easy balance to get right but I was laughing and drooling in equal parts so Monroe rocked it for me.

What happens when you wake up in a hotel suite next to a gorgeous naked man with absolutely no memory of the past twelve hours?

I guess it’s true what they say. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Or at least I hope it stays here. The Romantic Style convention was meant to be a weekend of raucous fun with friends, sun, and enough poolside margaritas to forget about my ex. But now, instead of meeting my fans and signing books, I’m stuck with cocky divorce lawyer Nate Wexler. He’s arrogant, infuriating, and I can’t keep my hands off of him. Judging by the state of our hotel room, last night was wild. I just wish I could remember it.

A pair of matching tattoos. A cheap wedding veil. Half an empty box of glow in the dark condoms.

What the hell just happened?

Out Now: This Old Heart of Mine – A.J. Compton

Isn’t that the goal in life? To be happier than you are afraid.

Ava Malone was born with a severe heart defect, but just days away from death she is given a second chance at life when she receives a heart transplant. Now she is fully recovered, she is determined to live her life, not only for herself but for her donor. But her journey of self-discovery takes an unexpected turn when she falls in love with Gabriel. Can Ava risk having her heart-broken again?

I don’t know what I was expecting when I first read the blurb for This Old Heart of Mine but when I started reading it, I was surprised (in a good way) I couldn’t stop, and I don’t know why I had any reservations. This is seriously well written, and thought provoking. I am a registered organ donor, but hadn’t given much thought to what it would mean for those I’d be leaving behind. Compton challenges you to think about this possibility and consider how this effects everyone involved, from the person whose life you could save, to a family coping with loss and learning to deal with the fact that a part of their loved one still lives on. It’s difficult to think about, but this really is an interesting read.

If that doesn’t appeal to you, this complex story is set within a romantic plot structure that doesn’t hold out on the HEA. Although I’m not sure I would have made the same choice as Ava, but you know me! The HEA’s are more Hannah’s thing.

But I am a sucker for a good poet and Gabriel’s words did not disappoint. I also loved the use of Pablo Neruda and E.E. Cummings. Compton also perfectly described how I feel about poetry: “is it possible to fall in love with words? I know they’re intangible objects, but they feel so alive to me”. This is definitely one of those books that you can’t help but quote from.

Read it, read it now!

Out Now: Do You Remember: A Sweethearts Novella – V.L. King

Do You Remember? is a military romance that looks back over the lives of Haven and Wyatt Epson from the first moment they met each other, and I can’t really say much more than that because I don’t want to spoil the story. Although you can probably guess how this is going to end…

But I can say this is a touching short story that conveys the right level of emotion (I may have teared up) and although it is a little formal for memories that are so personal, I still felt connected to the characters. It also furthered my respect for military families, I can’t imagine how difficult that life must be.

This is perfect if you’re looking for a quick yet satisfying read, perhaps on a journey home. Actually no, because then you may find your self crying on a train. Pack tissues, you have been warned!
