The Grown Up – Gillian Flynn

Originally written for George R.R. Martin’s anthology, Rogues (which I now have to read) and titled What do you do?, The Grown Up follows the narrator, a soft core sex worker (hand jobs only) come spiritualist, fortune teller who is paid to cleanse an old Victorian house whose owner believes is haunted. She soon realises that not all is as it seems.

Flynn is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. She is the queen of creepy, I mean the woman knows how to build tension and her writing makes my skin crawl in the best possible way. Despite only being 70 something pages long, The Grown Up is no exception. This is an accomplished short story as Flynn plays with the conventions of the traditional ghost story, and the psychological thriller genre. I can not wait for her next novel!
